Every Child Deserves a Smile: Run Live Smile

Half Marathon Live Run Smile Run for a Cause Running
For babies born with a cleft lip or palate, surgery is the main treatment. For cleft lip, surgery is generally scheduled when the child is about 3 months old. For a cleft palate, surgery is usually done at about 1 year old or slightly younger so that there are fewer issues with speech. The sooner you can do the repair, the better babies heal.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that occur when a baby's lip or mouth do not form properly. They happen early during pregnancy. A baby can have a cleft lip, a cleft palate, or both. A cleft lip happens if the tissue that makes up the lip does not join completely before birth. This causes an opening in the upper lip. The opening can be a small slit or a large opening that goes through the lip into the nose. It can be on one or both sides of the lip or, rarely, in the middle of the lip.

Children with a cleft lip also can have a cleft palate. The roof of the mouth is called the "palate." With a cleft palate, the tissue that makes up the roof of the mouth does not join correctly. Babies may have both the front and back parts of the palate open, or they may have only one part open. Children with a cleft lip or a cleft palate often have problems with feeding and talking. They also might have ear infections, hearing loss, and problems with their teeth.

Many children have other complications. They may need additional surgeries, dental and orthodontic care, and speech therapy as they get older. With treatment, most children with clefts do well and lead a healthy life. Children born with these conditions can also have problems with their ears and sinuses because fluids can travel where they shouldn't. If the defects are not corrected when children are young, they can also interfere with a child's ability to speak properly. And, when the cleft is in the front of the mouth, it interferes with the development of the teeth.

Some factors that have been associated with an increased risk for cleft lip and palate include changes in some genes, a deficiency of folic acid before pregnancy, taking certain medications while pregnant, drinking alcohol during pregnancy and having certain infections during pregnancy.

Smiling and laughing can have a positive effect on your well-being, but as you make the transition from child to adult, you often tend to lose the habit of indulging in these behaviors.

The Philippines is where Asia wears a smile. Beautiful products can only be made by happy people, but for our brothers and sisters that smile are deprived because of cleft lip or cleft palate this is something heartbreaking. Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation Philippines, Inc. (NCFPI) let everyone know that today, you're a lot stronger than you were yesterday because together with God we will bring you hope to LIVE behind every SMILE and RUN for a worthwhile cause.

"If you weren't happy with yesterday, try something different today. Don't stay stuck. Do better."
